The Company is emphasizing the importance of reducing waste generation while encouraging recycling and reuse for the benefit of the environment.
World Recycling Day is being celebrated this Wednesday, 17th, and Bracell, a global leader in dissolving pulp production, is carrying out various actions in support of the environment, including the recycling process at its manufacturing facilities located in São Paulo and Bahia. The company strictly complies with Brazil’s National Waste Management Policy (PNRS) through Bracell’s internal Waste Management Plan (PGRS). The goal of the program is to reduce the generation of waste materials and maximize recycling and reuse.
In addition, Bracell has implemented the Waste-to-Value Policy, which focuses on waste reduction, material reuse and recycling alternatives carried out by partner organizations. The company’s largest and most environmentally friendly pulp mill in Lençóis Paulista, São Paulo, has a materials recycling program that donates recyclable materials to local entities. These donations are essential for many families who rely on this activity for their livelihoods and also raise awareness about the company’s selective waste collection.
One of the benefiting entities is the Association of Disabled Persons of Lençóis Paulista (Adefilp). In addition to collecting recyclable materials, the association plays a significant role in the social reintegration of its members through sports, with many of them becoming medalists in various adapted competitions. Another organization that receives donations from Bracell is Cooprelp (Lençóis Paulista Recycling Cooperative). This cooperative, formed by families who rely on selective waste collection as a source of income, receives donations from both companies and materials collected from the city’s streets.
“Sustainability is in Bracell’s DNA, with a strong focus on reducing waste in all its processes and fostering the Circular Economy, where waste is transformed into inputs for other production processes. Each year, we make further progress in this agenda, contributing to the sustainable development of our geographies,” explains Márcio Nappo, Vice President of Sustainability and Corporate Communications at Bracell.
In its Bahia facility, Bracell Florestal properly manages 100% of the solid waste generated in its operations through the Waste Segregation Program, which ensures the correct segregation of waste for appropriate disposal, helping ease the environmental impacts of waste generation. The company has a partnership for the donation of recyclable waste to CORAL (Alagoinhas Cooperative of Collectors and Recyclers).
An average of 1.5 tons of recyclables is sent monthly through this partnership. Bracell also collaborates with other suppliers for recycling, reuse and reverse logistics, ensuring sustainable waste management.
In Santos, where the company has an export terminal, various reusable materials were donated to the NGO Sem Fronteira, a non-profit organization that promotes citizenship in the Santos region through recycling its by-products for environmental preservation. After demolishing a temporary administrative building in order to proceed with the construction of the Bracell Port Terminal at Santos Port, leftover materials were shared with the institution to be reused or recycled.
The donated products included: doors, toilets, bathroom sinks, faucets, office cabinets, chairs and fans, among other items. This initiative was part of the company’s business strategy to reinforce the importance of best sustainability practices.
